Wow, it looks like the elevator alarm was ringing the whole time.
This is the best part....the moment he gets out, he rides back up to the office with building staff to get his jacket and go home:

In his office he found that his co-worker, in a fit of pique over his disappearance, had written an angry screed, and taped it to his computer screen, for all their colleagues to see.
|
He never went back to work there.

I see the obvious similarities, but this was no food, drink or human interaction at all. In that respect, it's closer to the "hole" in jail, than just jail.
Also, how do you know jail so well?

I know it's their current building, I just said it's the same building 11 years ago (so the elevators may be a totally different setup by now)

Wow, that would suck ass. It kind of reminds me of the SIMS, where you can box someone into a small area. They walk around in circles, bitch, piss themselves, and eventually die.

I was wondering about this.
Did he hit the alarm? I'd imagine he'd have to, but it took 41 fucking hours to get a guy out of an elevator. One would think the fire department would show up much sooner. Especially one as renowned as the FDNY.

He kept the alarm on most of the time but had to turn it off periodically so he didn't go completely nuts.
The thing I fail to understand and was not addressed in the interview is why the fuck this guy didn't climb out of the top into the shaft. I don't care how dark or creepy or whatever it is up there, it's a fucking way out, is it not?

Totally. We've all seen the movies. This guy has not one ounce of survivalism in him.
"I'm stuck in an elevator. Welp! Guess that's it!"" Fuck you. After 2 hours I would've climbed into the shaft.

He was in the express zone between I think they said 9 and 39. That's potentially 10 floors above and 10 floors below him with no elevator doors. I don't know where he would have gone.

Well the guy had just gone out for a smoke, right? Probably had a lighter or matches on him. Got to be a way to set some shit on fire in the shaft to set off fire alarms. Something. Anything. Anything but sitting in that fucking elevator for almost 2 days, period.
Though one thing I imagine is the payday might have been worth it, and had he not stayed that long he probably would not have had a handsome law suit on his hands. He may have been thinking of that the whole time.

Read that New Yorker article. That elevator ruined this guy's life. He lost everything and barely got $100,000 out of it. Poor fucking sap.

Yeah he didn't get shit for what he went through. I can't imagine the thirst and hunger not to mention sensory deprivation. Also Diane Sawyer is a cunt in that interview making jokes. How out of touch there is nothing funny about what this man went through. I'm pretty tough and would of been naked and hysterical half way thru what this guy endured.

People have gotten much bigger paydays for much less.
I figure at the very least, the building management company was in violation of their contract to have people check the closed-circuit monitors showing the elevators.
